Understanding
the Issue

Child abuse happens in every community

The Issue

We know 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused by their 18th birthday.

Think about that for a minute. That means 10% of all children will be affected by child sexual abuse before they turn 18. And only about 12% of all child abuse cases are actually reported, so this number is most likely much higher than this.

Child sexual abuse can occur anywhere. It happens regardless of socio-economic status, race, religion, education – and it happens in places like homes, neighborhoods, schools, and youth sports environments, but it also occurs online, such as child pornography or communicating in a sexual manner by phone or internet.
